MEASAT Global Berhad (“MGB”) was incorporated under the name of Malayan Tobacco Company Ltd. (“MTC”) on 28 September 1956 under Section 15(1) of the Malaysian Companies Ordinances, 1940 to 1946, with primary operations focused on the manufacture, importation and sale of tobacco products.
MTC disposed of its entire tobacco manufacturing business and its marketing and distribution operations on 2 November 1999. On 8 May 2002, following a reverse takeover exercise, MTC became an investment holding company upon the completion of the acquisition of MEASAT Satellite Systems Sdn. Bhd. (then known as Binariang Satellite Systems Sdn. Bhd.).
Subsequently, on 23 July 2003, MTC changed its name to MGB to reflect the core business of the Group as the owner of Malaysia ‘s sole licensed regional satellite system.

1992
In 1992, in response to the Vision 2020 plan laid out by YABhg. Tun Dr. Mahathir Mohamad for the development of Malaysia’s communications infrastructure for the new millennium, Binariang Sdn. Bhd. brought together a team of experienced and highly motivated experts to develop and launch Malaysia’s first communications satellite system. The project was named the Malaysia East Asia Satellite, or MEASAT for short.
1996
This effort culminated in the launch in 1996 of the MEASAT-1 and MEASAT-2 communications satellites from the European spaceport in Kourou, French Guiana. The two high-powered Boeing 376HP communications satellites provided regional C-Band coverage and pioneered the use of Ku-Band in the high rainfall South East Asia region. Operated from a purposed built satellite control facility located 915m above sea level in Gunung Raya, Langkawi, the MEASAT-1 and MEASAT-2 satellites started providing satellite service across South East Asia from 1996. The launch of MEASAT-1 and MEASAT-2 led to a rapid increase in Malaysian infrastructure development in both the telecommunication and broadcasting industries, including the launch of the technologically advanced digital Direct-To-Home (DTH) Multi-Channel TV Service, Astro.
2001
Originally part of the Maxis Group, the satellite division became independent in 1998. In 2001, after renaming the holding company MEASAT Global Berhad and the operating company MEASAT Satellite Systems Sdn Bhd, the company came of age.
2006
MEASAT-3 launched in 2006 from Baikonur Cosmodrome, Kazakhstan paved the way of a new era of enhanced communication and broadcasting services for MEASAT’s customers.
2009
Three years later, MEASAT-3a was then launched in 2009 also from the Baikonur Cosmodrome, Kazakhstan, to support the growth of the MEASAT Direct-to-Home TV and Broadcast Distribution neighborhood at the 91.5°E orbital slot.
2011
In line with its vision to being the satellite operator of choice for the Malaysian Information and Communication Technology (ICT) industry, MEASAT partnered with THAICOM Public Company Ltd in 2011 for the Malaysian payload of the satellite at 119.5°E and renamed it as MEASAT-5. This partnership allows MEASAT to expand its support to local telecommunications companies in providing broadband connectivity across Malaysia.
2013
In 2013, in collaboration with Azercosmos Joint Stock Company a company set up by the Ministry of Communications and Information Technologies of the Government of the Republic of Azerbaijan, MEASAT launched its 5th satellite AFRICASAT-1a. Launched from the European Space Port in Kourou, French Guiana, the satellite will expand MEASAT’s coverage into new markets across Africa and the Middle East.
2014
To support the company’s growth, MEASAT-3b was then launched in 2014 from the European Space Port in Kourou, French Guiana. Co-located with MEASAT-3 and MEASAT-3a, MEASAT-3b forms Asia’s most robust Direct-To-Home (“DTH”) satellite neighborhood at 91.5°E
Today
Since the launch of the first two satellites, MEASAT has been supporting the development of Malaysia’s ICT infrastructure and expanding its regional presence. Today MEASAT operates from the world class MEASAT Teleport and Broadcast Centre in Cyberjaya, with a footprint covering 130 countries, representing 80% of the world’s population and host to one of the region’s strongest video and DTH neighbourhoods.
